FAQ

What is NotebookLM's Video Overview?

Video Overview is a NotebookLM feature that turns documents, slides and charts into an AI-narrated explainer video. It builds a structured visual walkthrough using images, diagrams, quotes and numbers drawn from the material you provide, making it a visual counterpart to Audio Overviews — good for explaining data, demonstrating processes and clarifying abstract concepts.

How is it different from an Audio Overview?

An Audio Overview is for listening; a Video Overview is for watching and listening. Video Overviews create new visuals and reference images and charts from your sources, so they suit situations that need structure and data shown. Both can coexist in one notebook, so you pick the format per scenario.

Can I customise the content?

Yes. When generating you can specify topics to focus on, state your learning goals and describe the target audience to sharpen the output. The Studio panel also consolidates Audio Overviews, Video Overviews, Mind Maps and Reports as side-by-side entries for one-click creation of different learning outputs.

What is it best used for?

Students and teachers explaining concepts, researchers turning long material into shareable briefings, knowledge workers converting dense documents into approachable presentations, and teams producing data or process explainers. Anywhere you must explain a pile of material to someone else, it saves the manual slide-building.

Is it free, and does it support other languages?

NotebookLM offers a free plan with usage limits. Video Overviews first rolled out to all users in English, with more languages following; more advanced Cinematic Video Overviews have been available to Google AI Ultra subscribers (18+) since March 2026. Check Google's official notes for current availability and limits.

Could it make up content not in my sources?

Video Overviews are designed to ground output in your uploaded sources, drawing images, charts, quotes and numbers from the source material, so it tracks the original more closely than generic chat. It is still generative AI, though, so verify key conclusions against the source, especially for formal reports or teaching.
