Workday Agent Harness and Headless Trusted Agent Platform
Rules do not have to be rebuilt for every agent: Agent-Ready Tools and Live Data Query carry Workday's permissions, approvals and audit trail with each request
Tool Overview
Details, capabilities and usage guidance
Features
- ✓ Rules travel with the request: Workday says that with Agent-Ready Tools and Live Data Query, every request carries Workday's rules with it, including who is asking, what they can see and do, which approvals apply, and how the action is recorded
- ✓ Agent Harness supplies task context: Workday says every agent deployed on Workday runs on Agent Harness, which gives each agent the context a task depends on, including who the person is, their role and reporting line, what they can see and do, and which policies and processes apply
- ✓ Context comes from the system of record: Workday says that context comes from the system that runs HR and finance, not from a data copy or policy document, so agents work from the facts and rules the business already trusts
- ✓ Governance and model routing built in: Workday says Agent Harness also governs each action and routes each task to the right model for cost and performance
- ✓ Developer Agent is generally available: Workday says teams can turn plain-language requests into custom agents and apps using their preferred development tool, including Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and the Workday Developer Site
How to Use
- Read Workday's official press release to confirm that the Trusted Agent Platform, Agent-Ready Tools, Workday Data Cloud, Developer Agent, Custom Agents and Agent Harness are all generally available
- Map your organisation's data boundaries, approval paths and sensitive fields in HR and finance against Workday's emphasis on permissions, approvals and provability
- Use Agent-Ready Tools, Workday's MCP tools, so any MCP-capable agent gets an approved way to read Workday data and take action under existing rules
- Use Developer Agent to generate agents from plain-language requests, then deploy them on Agent Harness to inherit context, governance and model routing
FAQ
What does headless mean for the Workday Trusted Agent Platform?
Workday's official press release says the platform is now headless, enabling customers to build, run and govern lawful AI agents across HR and finance with the development tools and models they choose. Workday says every agent, whether built by Workday, a customer or a partner, works under the same Workday permissions, approvals and audit trails.
Why does Workday keep stressing lawful agents?
Workday says enterprise software is going headless and AI agents can now do real work in HR and finance without anyone logging in, which is the risk: point an agent at an ungoverned copy of HR data in a data lake and it can read compensation it should never see, and connect it through a system-level account and it can act without approval, with no way to prove what it did or why. Workday quotes its CTO Gabe Monroy: headless can't mean lawless.
What are Agent-Ready Tools?
Workday says they are its Model Context Protocol (MCP) tools, giving any agent that supports MCP an approved way to read Workday data and take action. The release also quotes Ankur Sinha, head of enterprise and verticals at Anthropic, saying MCP gives agents a standard way to connect with the systems where work happens.
What does Live Data Query solve?
Workday says it lets teams and agents ask questions of live Workday data in SQL through Workday Data Cloud, with no custom reports, fragile integrations or stale data copies. Workday says it applies the right security and business rules so a BI dashboard or an AI agent gets answers from the same trusted source.
What exactly does Agent Harness do?
Workday says every agent deployed on Workday runs on Agent Harness, which gives each agent the context a task depends on - who the person is, their role and reporting line, what they can see and do, and which policies and processes apply - governs each action, and routes each task to the right model for cost and performance.
What roadmap did Workday publish?
Workday says that in early 2027 Agent Harness will add Agent Context Service and Grounded Reasoning: the first identifies the Workday context an agent needs and provides it before reasoning starts, so agents work faster and handle less sensitive data; the second checks requests against company policies, business processes and tenant data before an agent acts. Workday's example: if a manager asks an agent to move someone into a role the manager has no authority to fill, the agent will stop, explain why and point to the right next step instead of making a change that violates policy.
