What is Reading Speed Test?

An online reading speed test. Measure your words-per-minute (WPM) and comprehension, with reading-level rating and tips.. Everything runs locally in your browser — no uploads.

What is the average reading speed?

Adults average about 200–250 WPM for careful reading. Skimming can reach 400+, but comprehension drops; this test values speed and understanding together.

How is WPM calculated?

WPM = passage word count ÷ time in minutes. The Chinese test reports characters per minute, while English counts words by whitespace.

Why are there comprehension questions?

Reading speed only matters with understanding. If you score below two-thirds, try slowing down a little.

Can I take the test repeatedly?

Yes, unlimited and free. Averaging several attempts gives a more accurate picture and tracks your progress.

How can I read faster?

Practice chunking (reading word groups), reduce regression, stop subvocalizing every word, and read a little every day while gradually pushing your pace.

Is my data uploaded?

No. Timing and scoring run entirely in your browser.
